2026-07-12
TL;DR
- The UK city "escorts" slide has reversed. The subset I escalated yesterday bounced hard on 07-12: chichester 11→3, north london 10→3, brighton 8→3, ipswich 9→5, leicester 11→8, swansea 14→8. Cluster top-3 count recovered 168→180 — back to the 07-07 pre-slide level. Top-10 held ~317 all week. This closes the case as unconfirmed-update churn, exactly the partial-reversal the trackers warn about. (confirmed)
- Two laggards haven't bounced: colchester (16→16) and warrington (10→11). Watch-only — with the cluster recovering, these are the tail, not a new front. (confirmed)
- New, isolated AT cannibalization flare: "sex graz" was rank 1 on 07-11 on
/at/sex/graz/, then on 07-12 the ranking URL flipped to/at/sex/lend-graz/(a district page) and dropped to 12. First-ever appearance of lend-graz for this term; one day old. Flag, don't fix. (confirmed / cause unclear) - BR still climbing (73→75 ranked, avg 10.5). IT drifted 170→165 ranked — inside its own oscillation band, not an event. Rollups flat-to-up everywhere. (confirmed)
- The long "→OUT" mover list is the usual daily churn (UK: 4 out / 2 in today). Not an event — see the churn-baseline case. The two 404 profiles remain 404.
What moved and why
UK city cluster — recovered (confirmed). This was the escalating case, and the data resolved it in our favour. Per-day top-3 count across the 329-keyword UK "
AT "sex graz" cannibalization flip (confirmed swap, unclear cause). A clean single-keyword event worth logging. "sex graz" held rank 1–4 on /at/sex/graz/ for the whole week, then on 07-12 Google swapped the ranking URL to /at/sex/lend-graz/ (a Graz-district page) and the term fell to 12. lend-graz has never ranked for this keyword before. One day old, so it may flap back tomorrow — but a former #1 head term losing ~11 spots to intent confusion between the city page and its district child is exactly the cannibalization pattern the charter flags. New watchlist entry; revisit tomorrow before recommending anything.
BR expansion continues (confirmed). 73→75 ranked, avg improved 11.3→10.5. Healthy compounding while Google is receptive. Case unchanged — flag only on a two-week reversal.
IT (confirmed noise). Ranked count 168→172→170→165 over four days; today's 165 is the low end of its own band, not fallout. Thinness case holds: ~half the tracked set still unranked. No new signal.
Investigations
- Did the UK slide reverse or deepen? Pulled per-day trajectories for the fallers and the full cluster top-3/top-10 counts. Clear reversal: top-3 168→180, most fallers back in top-3, top-10 stable. Meets the watchlist's "if it reverses, close as unconfirmed-update churn" trigger.
- Algo context. WebSearch on July 2026 volatility: trackers (Semrush Sensor et al.) still show elevated but unconfirmed churn, attributed to the spam-update tail and AI-surface testing, with explicit "don't touch anything" guidance. Consistent with a reshuffle that self-corrected — validates not editing the city template.
- AT "sex graz" swap. Queried the URL history: lend-graz first appears for this term only on 07-12; the graz page held rank 1–4 for the prior week. Isolated, one day old.
- Churn sanity check. UK 07-12 vs 07-11: 4 fell out of top-100, 2 came in — very quiet. The briefing's big cross-market OUT list is baseline churn, not an event.
- 404 profiles. Both still 404 (stussy-babe41/AU-Warragul, vera-ragazza10/IT-Policoro) per the briefing's problems section.
Opportunities
- UK laggard recovery, low-effort. colchester and warrington are the only two former top-3 city pages that didn't bounce with the cluster. If they're internally under-linked relative to the recovered peers, a small internal-link nudge could pull them back to where the cluster now sits — but wait a day to confirm they're stragglers, not the next reshuffle.
- BR remains the standout build target — +2 ranked/day and improving average. Push internal links into whichever BR city clusters are newly entering while Google is receptive.
Recommendations
- Close the UK city-slide case and hold the line. No template edits — the cluster recovered on its own, confirming the volatility diagnosis. Keep a light 2–3 day eye on colchester/warrington only.
- Log and watch the AT "sex graz" URL flip (
/at/sex/graz/→/at/sex/lend-graz/, 1→12). One day old; if lend-graz keeps displacing the city page tomorrow, treat as cannibalization and consider de-emphasising the district page's internal links for the head term. Don't act on a single day. - 301 the two 404 profiles (stussy-babe41 → Warragul/AU listing; vera-ragazza10 → Policoro/IT). Standing low-effort item; still free position insurance, not time-sensitive.
Watchlist
Mirrored into watchlist.md: UK city-head slide CLOSED — unconfirmed-update churn (top-3 168→180 reversal on 07-12, top-10 stable throughout; colchester/warrington the only non-recovered stragglers, light watch). New case: AT "sex graz" cannibalization flip (former #1 → 12 as ranking URL swapped to lend-graz district page, 1 day old). BR still accelerating (75 ranked). IT thinness holding (~165 ranked, oscillating). 404s open, not time-sensitive. Churn-baseline and competitor-denominator artifact cases unchanged.
